Myrmecophila tibicinis is a large epiphytic orchid native to Central and northern South America. It’s commonly called the “trumpet player’s Schomburgkia” or “flute player’s orchid” because of its long hollow pseudobulbs.
- Native range: Belize, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Venezuela, Colombia, and parts of Mexico/Nicaragua depending on the source
- Habitat: Seasonally dry forests in bright light or full sun
- Pseudobulbs: Large, hollow, often inhabited by ants in nature
- Flowers: Fragrant magenta to reddish-purple blooms on extremely long flower spikes that can reach several meters
